<h3><span style="color: #0000ff;">Let’s admit it. The vast majority of the CrossFit world, however dedicated and willing, will not make it to the Games. Not everyone will try but clearly the majority who do try won’t get the chance to move past the open or regionals. With all of the hype surrounding the upcoming Games season, as well as the new media blitz from Reebok, it’s hard not to get pulled into a more competitive and intensive training. So where does the Game’s season leave the rest of us? What does a dedicated CrossFit enthusiast do to suppress this need to compete – to get in on the action?</span></h3>
<h3>
<span style="color: #0000ff;"> Fake it.</span></h3>
<h3><span style="color: #0000ff;">I’m not a fan of faking it in most circumstances, but this is one time where faking it really won’t leave you disappointed. Pretend like you are going to compete, even though you know you’re not.</span></h3>
<h3>
<span style="color: #0000ff;"> The non-competitor’s 4-step guide to training for the CrossFit Games</span></h3>
<h3><span style="color: #0000ff;">1.      Train like you have a chance. Prepare yourself for plenty of ESPN/ESPN2 time by working on your own weaknesses. Use this as an opportunity to show what you’ve accomplished in the past year. Watching the Games for hours on end (<em>and</em> highlights, <em>and</em> reviews of last years Games, <em>and</em> Rich Froning clips <em>etc</em>…) is not going to make you competition ready, however entertaining and inspiring it is.</span></h3>
<h3><span style="color: #0000ff;">2.      Clean up your diet. Those rock hard abs and sweaty bodies crushing weight are great eye candy, but that kind of body and performance doesn’t come from cheat days, it comes from practicing what you preach. Live the life: Competitors don’t eat crap before the Games, and neither should you.</span></h3>
<h3><span style="color: #0000ff;">3.      Get out of your rut. Yeah, your OHS is amazing but can you swim? Can you throw a baseball? The same actions get the same results so mix it up and be ready for whatever the Games might throw your way.</span></h3>
<h3><span style="color: #0000ff;">4.      Show up. Go to regionals, even if it’s just to watch. And then go to the Games to cheer on your favorites and size up your competition for next year.</span></h3>

I know that when I competed in Boxtoberfest because Susan got injured and we needed another female for our RX&#8217;d team, I learned things about myself that I never would have found out otherwise. I really got to see what I was capable of (even without training&#8230;right, Henry?) and it is way more than I would have ever imagined&#8230;the screaming spectators and the adrenaline of fear and excitement doesn&#8217;t hurt either. Let&#8217;s all be the best we can be&#8230;.</span></h2>

<h3><span style="color: #ff00ff;">That was Annie, the Asian girl, Eva, the taller one and former Olympic skier, and Nicole, the cute little one with the worried look in her eyes.  Nicole needed to be more explosive on her muscle-ups.  The static muscle-ups killed her on this workout.  This was one of the early videos and she got even stronger subsequently.  She now runs the level 2 CrossFit certifications.   Annie was just a little met-con machine.  She competed in the affiliate cup this last year for one of the Santa Cruz affiliates.  Eva was so strong.  She made a second athletic career competing in Olympic Lifting meets.  Notice how she just blows through the high hang cleans.</span></h3>

<h2><span style="color: #00ccff;">I saw a commercial for Gatorade that really really caught my attention. The new campaign is called &#8220;Win from Within&#8221;</span></h2>

<h2><span style="color: #00ccff;">Interesting campaign&#8230;.it&#8217;s not about the shirt or the zero weight shoes, it&#8217;s about what is inside of you&#8230; hmmmm shoes.  Shoes. Shoes.Shoes&#8230;.I have recently become obsessed with my feet and how I am outfitting my feet. As much as I hate to admit it, much of this focus on my feet and the equipment for my feet comes from external sources. I listen to folks at the gym, I watch and listen to the throwers in Albuquerque, I read blogs, and I watch videos on you tube of throwers and Crossfit. I have &#8220;drunk the kool-aid&#8221; when it comes to my feet.</span></h2>
<h2><span style="color: #00ccff;"> About six months after I started Crossfit, I bought myself my first pair of flat athletic shoes&#8230;.my trusty Pumas&#8230;.I also workout in an old ratty pair of converse. When I first started throwing highland athletics, these are the shoes I threw in.</span></h2>

<h2><span style="color: #00ccff;">In the Highland games, the flat shoe makes it hard to Throw some events, not enough traction. So, I eventually bought myself a pair of cleats&#8230;ha! Me &#8230;.cleats. The cleats made a huge difference in some events. In my favorite event, weight over bar, I feel like the cleats anchor me to the turf until I make the decision to explode and release the weight.</span></h2>

<h2><span style="color: #00ccff;"> Then came one of the most extreme purchases&#8230;boot blades&#8230;dang, these are kinda sexy&#8230;..they hold your feet firmly to the ground when you throw a hammer&#8230;I haven&#8217;t quite figured out the form yet with the new boots, but I am working on it. The odd thing is, it wasn&#8217;t throwing &#8220;badly&#8221; without boots. So why did I buy them? Did I get them because they are kinda cool? Did I buy them to give me Scottish highland athletic cred? Did I buy them to made me feel like I was a legitimate athlete? I suppose time and practice will give me my answer about the boots.</span></h2>

<h2><span style="color: #00ccff;">Then came my Crossfit shoes. I found myself thinking, if I have special shoes for throwing, I should get the right footwear for Crossfit, right? So then the UPS guy delivers my Inov-8 and later my weight lifting shoes. I feel a little obsessive. Perhaps I have gone way too far, perhaps my old pair of converse are enough? Am I trying to compensate for what I feel like I lack on the inside by buying shoes? The same question exists for me about these new Crossfit shoes that I have about the boot blades.</span></h2>

<h2><span style="color: #00ccff;">I want to believe there is something to the Gatorade ad&#8230;not that I think Gatorade is what I need on the inside&#8230;but that so much of what I can do comes from what I believe I can do&#8230;BUT there is something about having the right equipment as well&#8230;.even if having the equipment simply makes me believe I can be better. I do want to be better, a better highland athlete, a better weightlifter, a better&#8230;um&#8230;athlete. So, I am trying this equipment, see what it gives me, see what I give myself by using it.</span></h2>
