Fight Gone Bad 6 has long since past but the impact of that experience has not. While I am no stranger to activism and fundraising, raising funds with a global group of athletes was new to me. Using facebook as a fundraising resource was also new. One of the most moving things for me in participating in this fundraiser was to be reconnected with the father of a girl I was very close to in high school. He made a generous donation and passed the word on to others, but more than that he wrote me a beautiful letter that inspires me everyday. You see I caught a lot of flack from my “radical” friends thinking I was supporting the military or the war-which I wasn’t then and never will be.  I asked if I could share the letter he wrote me in repsonse on our blog and he agreed. So here it is …thanks everybody and see you tomorrow!

You are most welcome. It needs to be said. Over and over. I have a lot of friends on FB who agree with me and would fully support what you have done in past and are doing now. The ’60s generation (mine) is puzzled, confused, and quite frankly disgusted by the lack of effective action, I.e., “being present not only emotionally and intellectually, but physically. I know personally what its like to face down 200 mounted Tactical Police Force in a one way in/out alley outside the Waldorf-Astoria, I know what its like to be gassed and clubbed outside the Dept of justice in ’70. I know what its like to hear that iron door clang shut in a federal penitentiary where I was being jailed for draft resistance in ’72 AFTER the draft was over. It’s a loud sound – LOL – both aurally but emotionally. Keep on being present. Keep it real, not only for yourself but for your peers. A 40-something “organizer” in Paonia said to me last month: “Your generation (the ’60s) failed us, Hugh.” Hugh: “Why?” “Because you ran out of steam in the ’70s” My reply (blunt though I’m also working on that): “Fuck you.” And proceeded to recount some of the “being present” occurrences above, all of which still reside not only in FBI but also CIA/NSA files (documented NY Times 1985). I am wondering why a million people aren’t encamped in front of White House. There are too few of you out there, Crow. His idea of community organizing is attending Democratic Party meetings. My idea of effective community organizers when the stakes are as high as they are are Tom Hayden, Bobby Seale and Eldridge Cleaver. Amen. Be thankful. Keep it real with your peers. You/they will determine whether this country (and world) survives. The situation now is several orders of magnitude more serious than the ’60s was. Venceremos.

Complete as many rounds as possible in 20 minutes of:

115 pound Push press, 10 reps
10 KB Swings, 1.5 pood
10 Box jumps, 24 inch box

Awesome. Thank you so much for sharing this, and please let him know I appreciate him saying this. More people from our parents’ generation need to speak up and help inspire those in our generation to wake up from their apathy – live life with intention!
