Kim Abeyta-Martinez/Athlete Profile #3
Name. Kim Abeyta-Martinez
How long doing have you been doing CF? I have been doing Cross Fit for a year this mid August.
What made you try CF? I wanted a different challenge from spinning and some guy at my old gym mentioned Cross Fit and I looked it up and it seemed similar to boot camp. So I tried it and found out that it was boot camp on steroids X 10.
How is CF different from other things you’ve done before? It is different in that everyday there is a new challenge with a varied routine.
What do you love most about it? I love the fact that not only is it physically challenging, it is also mentally challenging and I like seeing myself work through those challenges. It empowers me with courage and strength that I never had before. I now say “I can do this”. I also love seeing the other athletes perform. There are some amazing people with awesome strength and fortitude.
What has changed for you since you began CF? My body shape has changed. I have lost weight but also gained muscle and I eat and feel better now. (I am down 2 dress sizes – no need to give details). Also, I have more courage to try things that I would have never tried before.
What goals do you have in CF? I am embarrassed to say that I still cannot do an unassisted pull up. My goal is to do an unassisted pull up, run faster and do more burpees within a minute. I want to be like Darlene, the Burpee Queen.
What is the hardest thing about CF? The hardest thing about CF is trying to improve on one move, when so many other moves need improvement, like double unders, pull ups, snatch, overhead squats, etc.
Do you have a diet? Why? Why not? I am on the Paleo Diet at least 80% of the time.
What is your favorite kind of workout? Least favorite? I like long work outs more than 20 minutes and I like the combination of complex strength movements like power clean squaqt, push press, front squat and back squat, etc. These combined moves not only challenge me physically but mostly mentally because I am thinking the whole time about if I can get through the work out and not to quit, and that I can finish.
My least favorite work outs include burpees because they are hard and box jumps and double unders because of my old knee injury.
