An update from Lorenzo

Our dear friend Lorenzo is in the clink. It is an unfair and unfortunate situation, to be sure, but Benz is in there and he is making the best of it. In fact, he is not only making the best of it, he is changing lives. There are few people that I admire as much as Lorenzo. He is an excellent athlete, an awesome human and a born coach and leader. He runs two Crossfit classes a day and he has 7 students and a few that he is recruiting as we speak. I send him the programming that we do every week at CFSF. He does our workouts and writes some of his own. It makes me so happy to know that he is doing and teaching the workouts that we are doing. We are all connected. This is part of an email that he sent me yesterday.

Yesterday was our friend Jason Poole’s last workout with us we took some CF pictures and then did our workout in the fuckin rain :)  It was AWESOME!!! Ha! So here is the workout we did in honor of Jason Poole:

I can’t wait to do this one, in honor of Poole and in honor of Lorenzo. We are going to help Mr. Poole in anyway that we can as he reenters society and searches out his new Crossfit gym!

The most awesome part of this for me is that Lorenzo used to hate double unders. They were his least favorite and the only time that I have ever seen him lose his cool was due to double unders. Before he left, one of the last WODs he did at Crossfit Sante Fe was Annie (50,40,30,20,10- double unders and situpss). He and Phil Madrid (the King of the double under) were in class together and Phil finished the WOD before Lorenzo got through his first set of 50 double unders. He struggled and struggled and I don’t think he ever got more than one at a time. He was cursing and throwing his rope and all I could do was tell him to be kind to and patient with himself. It was one of the first times that I felt really effective as a coach. Like I could make a difference,  not in the performance, but in the perception of the performance. Lorenzo and I bonded and then he set off on a mission to conquer the double under. As we all know, the only way to get better at double unders is by suffering through not being good at them. So that’s what he did. He was patient and persistent and now he is programming workouts that revolve around double unders. Crazy.

Lorenzo is a man who, against all odds, is up to something. He has made me want to be a better person with a better attitude. He is making a difference and I am committed to helping him. I visited him a couple of weeks ago and we spoke about the equipment and resources that are available at their gym. They are limited, but they do their best. In keeping with the constantly varied aspect of Crossfit, they need more equipment. His wish list is medicine balls, rings, kettlebells, jump ropes and bumpered plates for Oly lifts. I have not yet made contact with the powers that be at his prison camp, but I am to convincing them to help me implement a community based fitness and nutrition program that will be instrumental to the fulfillment, empowerment and rehabilitation of the prisoners at the Englewood FPC that could one day be duplicated. I know that I am shooting high and playing big and honestly I am a little scared. But, I will not take no for an answer.  I need the help of my community to get this done and you guys are my community. I will keep you informed of what my plans are and how you can help. I have a couple of ideas to raise money and get equipment donated. I have no doubt that this project could be an opportunity for our community to get even better and become even closer. This is a large and unreasonable goal. I believe in you and I believe in the strength and power of the community that we have created. You better believe that I am going to copy and paste this blog into my next email correspondence with Benz. You can send him a love note in the comments and I will pass those along as well.

Who is on board?




I like “We are all connected” because I feel even after I came back to Boulder. Without all coaches and friends in UNDISPUTED FITNESS, I wouldn’t start crossfit AND couldn’t keep doing it. I check WOD in Santa Fe and it encourages me to do my WOD in Boulder. Miss you all! mio
